The Villa was built in 1886 and is peaceful and charming. Situated on the mountain at the top of Bellapais village, looking down over the village, the beautiful medieval abbey and the sea. Behind the villa are the mountains where one can walk for hours. Air conditioning has recently been installed in all three bedrooms.

It is a four minute walk down the steep road to the village where there are some small shops and restaurants. The Villa is approached along a mountain road (no horrid drops,) as it is not possible to drive up from the village. Entrance is through a walled garden where there are fruit trees and flowers.

You are welcome to any fruit in season, there are usually lemons on the tree for your drinks.

On the ground floor there are three double bedrooms, each with air conditioning. One bedroom has a double bed, the other two have twin beds. All have windows overlooking the wonderful view. The upstairs beamed sitting room has a large open fireplace, there are some board games and guidebooks

The small fitted kitchen is well equipped for 6 people. Both rooms open on to the large sun terrace, 40ftx10ft, from where we have the most breathtaking view of the village the Abbey,

Kyrenia harbour, the sea and the sunsets over the mainland Turkish Mountains which themselves can be seen at times. It is the most perfect place to sit with a drink and a book.

There are various chairs and loungers and a table, plus a Cyprus style barbeque

Due to the height of the sun terrace I don't consider the house suitable for very small children.

The villa is also equipped with a hair drier, radio and tape player. Bedding and towels are provided but we do ask you to take your own beach towels.

Furnishing is Turkish style where possible with kilims and sheepskins on the tiled floors.

If you travel via Turkey, Ercan, (pronounced Erjan) airport is a 25 minute drive away and we can arrange either a taxi or car hire to the villa. The car hire man will take you to the villa and back to the airport on your return. The alternative is to fly to Larnaca airport on the Greek Cypriot side of Cyprus, from where we can also arrange either a taxi or car hire to the villa.

Cost of living is low, with the local supermarkets Lemar and Tempo comparing favourably with their UK counterparts.

A welcome pack is provided which includes a bottle of wine. The Duty Free shops at both Ercan, (pronounced Erjan) and Larnaca airports will be open for your arrival where prices are cheaper than in U.K. airports.

Bellapais is a small and friendly village’made famous in the fifties when Lawrence Durrell wrote Bitter Lemons about his life there.

There are some good restaurants in the village and an excellent village shop. The small Turkish Cafe, which is also a takeaway serves excellent food. Bellapais is on a plateau,overlooking the coast. The small town of Kyrenia (Girne) is two and a half miles away with what is considered to be one of the most beautiful harbours in the world.

Cyprus is not glamorous or sophisticated but still very unspoilt where we still can find a beach to ourselves.

There are also many archaelogical sites and historical remains that can be explored


The Island is famous for its wild flowers in the spring which turn the mountains first yellow and then pink and red.

The local people are friendly and helpful with English being widely spoken. Electricity is the same as England. Water is safe to drink and no vaccines are required. Driving is on the left, your usual driving licence is all that is needed.

Sterling is accepted almost everywhere as it is prefered, it can be changed to Turkish Lira at the Banks (slow) or money changers also the Tree of Idleness in the village...

Hotel beaches can also be used for a small fee, also there are plenty of empty beaches along the coast.


The bays are shallow and the sea is buoyant with very little current. At the bottom of the village there is a hotel with pool that they seem happy for visitors to use if they buy drinks.

There is a selection of paper back books in the house and some music tapes. You are welcome to exchange any of the paperbacks. The water is heated by immersion heater, switch in the hall. Flights are from Heathrow, Gatwick and Stanstead, plus one flight a fortnight from Manchester. Fights to Ercan normally land in Turkey, Istanbul or Izmir for refuelling, although more recently there have been a number of direct flights. You do not usually leave the aircraft. This stop-over takes about 45mins then Cyprus is about one hour away.

There are two main airlines that fly into Ercan. Cyprus Turkish Airlines and Turkish Air plus some charter flights. It is worth shopping around, we suggest Metak. 0207 9356961 - Regent 01983 864212 - Cyprus Paradise 0208 3438888. For flights into Larnaca, we suggest you enquiry locally for the best option from your preferred point of departure.

We have a maid who cleans and prepares the house for your arrival and you will have a visit the next morning from the family who look after the villa. They are on hand for any problems that might arise.

BOOKING INFORMATION

The cost of the house is £350 per week (£375 in August) for two people, £20 per week supplement for each person over two. £10 for children. This is to cover the costs of extra cleaning, laundry and generous welcome pack that includes a bottle of wine and some beer. We require a deposit of 50% at the time of booking and the remainder paid one month before travel.

Because of the steep walk to the villa it is nessessary to be fairly mobile.
