Hobbiton will be recalled by fans of the Peter Jackson trilogy, Lord of the Rings, as the home of Frodo and Sam of the Shire. Hobbiton was the start of their epic journey to banish the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom, Mordor, where it was forged.

Hobbiton is located in MataMata, about 2 hours drive South of Auckland. The set was dismantled after filming, but thousands of visitors continue to enjoy a visit to Hobbiton to visit this idyllic setting for themselves.

Film buffs will recognise the road where we first saw Gandalf the Grey. That same fateful road down which Frodo Baggins later set off, first to Rivendale, and was joined by Pippin, Merry, and of course Sam Gamgee who remain faithfully at his side to the very end.

VISITING HOBBITON

The filming of the Lord of the Rings trilogy in various New Zealand film locations has undoubtedly been a spur for many people to visit for a vacation. Many of the locations were filmed on New Zealand's South Island, but Hobbiton is an example of North Island location.
