A 15th century townhouse with a stunning hanging walled rose garden situated in the citadelle ramparts at the foot of the Royal City. The property can accommodate up to eight people. La Roseraie de la Poterie is located in the heart of the historic town.

The central location provides amazing views of the 10th c Dungeon as you come out of the front door! With free parking opposite the house, this is a calm, central neighbourhood that is so convenient for all the monuments, shops and restaurants and sports facilities that Loches has to offer.

Loches is a riverside town. The serpentine Indre runs through Loches - a small twisting current makes it challenging for anglers who like to dangle along the banks, right in the heart of town. Cave-dwellings and troglodytes abound along the river valley, providing much of the white, chalky limestone typical of the region. Loches has many fine restaurants, cafés, and bistros... the advantage of renting the house within the citadelle walls is that you can drink and dine without need for a car.

The parquet floor hallway leads to the the lounge and balcony. Sunsets are memorable, as the house is south-facing.

The lounge has french windows leading to the graceful balcony and overlooks the tower, rose arbour and garden. There is a large dining table and chairs, double sofa bed, period furniture, satellite TV/VCR/DVD. The study has a computer and a view onto the balcony.

The lounge, and study are both equipped with roomy sofa beds of good quality. Their large windows overlook the rose arbour, garden and tower. Persian carpets, a baby grand piano and the furniture lend character to the house, and there is ample storage space for clothing and personal belongings.

The kitchen, which also opens onto the balcony, is newly fitted with designer/hi-tech cooker, sink and cupboard! The separate breakfast room has views over the the balcony and garden.

All rooms have waxed wooden parquet floors, except the kitchen, bathrooms, breakfast room. The balcony has a spiral staircase that leads to a utility room with washing machine & double sink, a modern tiled large shower room & washbasin. Two additional washrooms (toilets) have been installed for extra convienence.

Main bedroom: Large double bedroom (1.6m x 2.00m bed). Two large windows with views of the rose garden and tower.
Second bedroom: Smaller double bedroom has a period bed (1.20m x 1.90m). Views over the rose garden and tower. This room is off the lounge and has a quaint and quirky charm.

The garden door leads to the walled rose garden with arbour, and tower embedded within the rampart wall. A flight of broad steps lead to the garden entrance and street level. The garden is full of roses and calbash hanging grapevines cover the arbour.

The artist owners of the house live in a garden flat while the house rented, which has its own separate garden entrance to assure the privacy and independence of guests. In addition to being artists, they are both avid gardeners, with a particular interest in herbs. They are very happy to suggest "routes du vin", with visits to nearby vineyards and tastings. This region of the Loire has many famous vineyards and fine wines to discover and take home.

LOCATION

Loches is an historic town (population 8,000) famous for its arts and history that is set in the Loire valley (Touraine Côté Sud).

Its 10th century Dungeon was inhabited by Richard the Lionhearted and the Plantagenet kings.
The 13th c church and chateau was home to Francois I.
Joan of Arc passed by the house on her mission.

The town is renowned for its tourist attractions... an outdoor summer opera festival, classical, jazz and rock concerts, 'son et lumiere' performances, medieval nocturnal markets as well as biweekly fresh produce markets (sat & wed). The petit train takes tourists round the town several times a day, for there are many monuments and interesting facts to learn about Loches.

Within a 2 - 5 minute walk there are 2 museums, municipal tennis courts and outdoor /indoor swimming pools which have breathtaking views over the chateau and medieval cité on high. Gourmet restaurants, cafe terraces, shops of all nature, a small well stocked supermarket, post office, pharmacies, banks, all at hand.

Chateaux and other nearby attractions

Nearby Loire Valley tourist attractions include famous chateaux: Chateaux of Amboise, Chenonceaux, Villandry (for garden lovers), Chambord, and Saumur are all within an easy drive from Loches. The famous Beauval Zoo is also worth a visit.

Futuroscope

For a complete change from the 'past', France's Futuroscope is a 90 minute drive towards Poitiers, and a great day out - one of Europe's best theme parks!

Travel directions

The expanding airport of Tours has daily flights to and from Stansted, thanks to Ryanair and their very affordable rates. Car hire facilities are within the airport. Coaches also take travellers to the Tours coach and train station. Loches is approximately within a 5/6 hr drive from most ports, Caen and Dieppe being the closest.
